Cotton Candy vs Little Cog-Burt
In these two stories you may not see the similarities at first, but as you read the story deeper you can see the similarity with the authors. With Phillis Shand Allfrey and Dora Alonso, both being from the Caribbean and both of them talking about what they saw and experienced. And the similarity in jobs they both had with both of them working in journalism in and tv and radio. But with all that being said they had some differences with Phillis living part of her life in England and Dora lived most if not all of her life in Cuba. In their differences, they both worked for the people of their island with Dora writing and owning the Free Press newspaper in Cuba and also writing to oppose imperialism in the island. Phillis Shand Allfrey was also known for her activism in the islands with her founding the Dominica Labor Party and was also associated with the West Indies Labor Party. This also translated into her presence in the newspaper where she served as an editor for two major Dominica newspapers, Dominica Herald and Dominica Star, this was her job for over 15 years. Even with all the similarities seen, there are still some major differences between the two stories to start off the island that these two stories represent are different, with Cotton Candy being from Cuba and Little Cog-Burt being from Dominica. They also have contrasting timelines with Cotton Candy being over a lifetime while Little Cog-Burt being over the Christmas period. Both stories showed someone being outed by society with the laborers being thought of as less than the family by the wife in Little Cog-Burt, while in Cotton Candy it was the prostitute that was outed by the community. To conclude these stories have a lot of similarities and differences but in the end, they both give the reader a similar message of love and respect to everyone,
