In the short story Tétiyette and the Devil are from the small French island in the Caribbean, that is a funeral tale that developed as a genre to make sense of all the death in the country. This story was writing in a combination of prose and poetry to give the reader imagery the situation the story was told. I believe that the story is still relevant to today with the fact that you can still see the pattern of women and men falling for the “Devil” and tricking themselves into believing that the Devil isn’t the Devil. This can be seen on page 2 when her mom says,”... after he falls asleep tonight stick him with it. If blood flows he is a human being, but if slime oozes out he is the Devil.” As you can guess slime came out but she tricked herself into believing that he wasn’t the Devil so she stayed with him. In the end, when it came down to it her family wasn’t ready to help her as they warned her about him and it wasn’t for her brother the Devil would have consumed her. The author was a young girl from the island of Guadeloupe, but this story was made for a wider audience than just the people on the island, so the affected audience is everyone. This text is a spiritual and literary text used to both entertain and explain what is going on and what has and will happen. To concluded with the storytelling of the young girl has given the reader things to think about in their future actions about judging people.
